A Clinical Study of Deep Neck Infections


Abstract
Deep neck infections, which affect soft tissue ana fascial compartment of head and neck can be lead to lethal complications 17 cases treated ever a three-year period were reviewed with literature considerations.
Involved spaces were peritonsillar space 5 cases, submandibular space 5 cases, parapharyngeal space 3 cases, retropharyngeal space 2 cases, parotid space 1 case, suprasternal space 1 case. 8 of 17 cases required incision and drainage, 2 of which complicated by airway obstruction and improved by tracheostomy. One of two cases of retropharfngeal abscess required open mediastinotomy. Treatment of deep neck space infections requires knowledge of the natural history of disease, detailed anatomy and management guidelines including hospitalization culture and sensitivity test, antibiotic theraphy and surgical intervention.
